On the 10th October 2011 the Mayor of Salisbury opened the newly built extention at the Community Centre.  There was a buffet lunch and it was a great opportunity to meet other agencies who work in the area.

The Community Centre is a vibrant place with staff and volunteers who work hard to provide a variety of activites for the local community.  Here are some of the activies that are taking place:

On Wednesday the 15th February 2012 the Community Centre are hosting a free family arts activity event called 'Surviving the Stone Age'!  The sessions are being run from 10:30am until 12 noon and then from 12:30pm until 2pm.  The event is being organised by the Salisbury Museum and artist Jamie Aldridge will be leading the arts activities.  There is no need to book because you can just turn up and if you would like further information please telephone 01722 416885.

On the first Wednesday of each month the Bemerton Heath Residents Association meet in the Centre at 7pm. This meeting is open to all residents on the estate and is a ideal way to discuss housing related issues that are affecting you. The next meeting is taking place on the Wednesday the 1st February 2012 at 7pm.

Each Monday a youth club is held in the Centre for children aged 11 – 14 years of age and on Fridays it is open to children aged 7 – 10 years of age. Parents are welcome to join in as the staff at the Centre are always looking for volunteers.

Volunteers are always needed to help at the events that the Centre staff arrange so if you are interested in getting involved please contact them on 01722 349271. If you are looking to get back into work then this type of voluntary work could be great experience!

Living With A Disability

Radian has a new Disability Panel for the Avon area. It meets regularly to look at housing issues affecting people with disabilities.

Whether you have a mental health problem, a physical disability or a condition that makes some functions difficult for you, you would be welcome on this Panel.

We meet about every two to three months in an informal setting, and discuss ways that can make life easier for people.

If you would like to be part of this friendly group, make some new friends and help others then contact Giv Thornton on 023 8062 8169 or email her at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . If you have problems with transport we’ll arrange a taxi to collect you and take you home after the meeting.

Fawley In Our Sights

Do you ever get the feeling that nothing much happens where you live? If you live in Fawley this could all change! We are going to hold some ‘Planning for Real’ events during Autumn where you can come and tell us what life is like where you live. Keep an eye on the events calendar and these pages as we shall put the dates and venues up as soon as we have them. You could also get involved in organising them, why not give Giv Thornton a call on 023 8062 8169 or email her on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it as she would love to hear from you.

What does ‘Planning for Real®’ involve? Giv would say a lot of work and a lot of fun. At Woolston she produced a huge aerial map where everyone could identify their own gardens (better get yours tidied up now). People could write comments and suggestions on cards which they placed on the appropriate spot on the map. So, if they felt cars sped round a particular corner lots of cards could end up being placed there saying things like ‘traffic calming’ or ‘speed bumps needed’.

All this information is brought together into a report which is made available to the whole community. ‘Planning for Real’® goes one better as it brings interested residents back together again to work out what could and should be done, where money to do the work could come from, and who could be involved.
